Who We Are
About Boston Bakes for Breast CancerNow in it’s 9th year, Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer has evolved and grown into one of the sweetest weeks Boston and the Greater Boston area has experienced. Teaming up with restaurants, bakeries, and cafes across the region, Boston Bakes offers the opportunity to enjoy a delectable dessert, and support breast cancer research and care at the same time.
Previously a part of The Eva Brownman Breast Cancer Fund, Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer is now registered through the Attorney General’s Office as an official commercial co-venture. This is very exciting for our event and we’re looking forward to having our best year yet. Last year Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer raised over $40,000. This year, with the help of our participating establishments and their dessert loving guests, we hope to break the two hundred and fifty thousand dollar mark of funds raised through Boston Bakes!
About the Eva Brownman Breast Cancer Fund
In 1973, Eva Brownman, 44 years old, lost her battle to breast cancer and left behind two young daughters. In 1991, these daughters--Marjie Brownman Shapiro and Carol Brownman Sneider--in association with several of their friends and relatives, established The Eva Brownman Breast Cancer Fund to benefit breast cancer research and education at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. This was done in the hope that no child would lose a mother, no husband a wife, no mother a daughter, and no friend a friend to Breast Cancer. Most importantly, their hope was that no other women would have to go through the pain and anguish of this disease.
The Eva Brownman Breast Cancer Fund is an all-volunteer organization of women and men dedicated to bringing awareness to the issues surrounding breast cancer through education and fundraising. Funds raised are designated for breast cancer research, education and treatment initiatives in the Breast Oncology Center at the Gillette Center for Women's Cancers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Dana-Farber is one of 28 federally designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States and a teaching affiliate of Harvard medical school.
Funding from The Eva Brownman Breast Cancer Fund has supported several cutting-edge clinical trials, the establishment of a psychosocial research and support program for patients and their families, and Visiting Professorship. To date, over $600,000 has been raised by the Eva Brownman Breast Cancer Fund. An infusion room in the Gosman Adult Clinic at Dana- Farber has been named in recognition of the Fund's efforts.
Besides raising funds, The Eva Brownman Breast Cancer Fund also raises awareness through symposia and educational programs. The fund has conducted seminars for many local organizations including colleges, churches, synagogues, and businesses. These programs are designed to meet each group's needs, but their overriding mission is to educate individuals about breast cancer and how to prevent, detect, and fight the disease.
The Eva Brownman Breast Cancer Fund's mission is "Shining Light on Breast Cancer." Through education and fundraising, we have made a difference and we will continue to do so until the threat of Breast Cancer no longer exists.
